My Scabies Story

Hi! Welcome to my little corner of the Internet. I made this site to help people fight scabies the fastest way possible. I am a real person who suffered through scabies! This site exists to share my story and to help you realize you are not alone. Scabies is a very misunderstood condition that even many doctors don’t fully understand. So, here is my story of how I got scabies and how I figured out how to get rid of it.

My Scabies Story

I contracted scabies from a person I was dating. It’s as simple as that! This is a very common way to contract scabies, but it’s important to note that this is NOT an STI. It is commonly contracted through sexual contact simply because there’s skin-on-skin contact. You can get scabies from close contact with anybody, or sometimes even sitting on something!  When I was told there was a possibility that this person had scabies and they had seen a doctor, I laughed it off. I didn’t know much about scabies and figured since I wasn’t itchy, I probably didn’t have it and didn’t think much about it.

A few weeks later, I slowly started to feel itchy on my hands and forearms. My arms and hands started to break out in small, red bumps that looked like irritated skin from an allergic reaction. It kept getting worse and nothing I was doing was helping. It started to affect my sleep as I would wake up constantly throughout the night itching myself. I decided to go see a doctor and tell them I might have scabies. The doctor barely looked at my skin and told me it was probably a combination of stress and allergies. Spring was just starting and I was going through a very stressful time in my life, but it didn’t seem like the right answer. He prescribed me some steroid cream and sent me on my way.

The bumps worsened and began to spread to my legs and my genital area. The genital area in particular was awful! It was so uncomfortable and the bumps kept getting worse. I constantly felt embarrassed, stressed out and distracted by the itchiness. The steroid cream did nothing to help me, so I went to a women’s clinic to see if I could get a second opinion. This time, the doctor thoroughly examined my skin, including my genital area. The doctor IMMEDIATELY knew this was scabies and prescribed me permethrin cream, the most common medication for scabies. I was relieved to be told that I wasn’t crazy and that this was, in fact, a common condition. Scabies can live on your body for weeks before you feel any itchiness. My condition had worsened because they were breeding on my skin and I wasn’t doing anything about it.

I followed the instructions for the permethrin application and began researching other remedies on the Internet. This was in 2012, so there wasn’t much information out there other than some forums where others shared their experiences. Through these forums, I found out much of the information I have on this site. It was expensive, time-consuming and distracting me from my everyday life. However, I followed through on the remedies I found online and THEY WORKED. It took weeks before I could safely confirm that I did not have scabies anymore. The allergic reaction on the skin lasted for a few months after they were gone, and I continued to use the products the entire time to prevent re-infestation.

I went crazy from the lack of sleep when I had scabies. For about 2 months, I wasn’t sleeping more than 2-3 hours at a time before waking up and feeling trapped in my itchy skin. At one point, I could SEE the burrows the mites were digging in my skin as they were burrowing! It was honestly horrible. My roommates were grossed out, I didn’t want to hug or touch anybody, and even some family members were upset at me. I felt very isolated. If you’re going through any of this, you are NOT alone. I promise you! IT WILL GET BETTER. You MUST be persistent and not give up, or they won’t go away. I suggest starting with learning more about my favorite remedy, diatomaceous earth before learning more about how to treat your home and other remedies I’ve used.

Good luck!
